aAdli Tıp AD, bRadyoloji AD, GATA, ANKARA Recent advances in radiological imaging methods, put forward the possibility of the use these methods for forensic medicine applications in last years. Imaging methods like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) and computed tomography (CT), are being used to use for postmortem investigations.
Case; 25 years old, male, reported cause of death was hanging. Neck region of the victim had been investigated by the imaging methods of MR and CT prior to the autopsy. In the autopsy, a furrow slanting upward superficially toward the knot on the neck, hemorrhage in the soft tissue and fractures of both horns of the hyoid bone have been found.
Altough no pathologic evidence was found in the CT examination performed prior to autopsy, while evaluated with the autopsy findings, bilateral horn fracture in the hyoid bone have been found. No pathologic findings have been found in neck’s soft tissue examination with MR.
We aimed to present this case in order to introduce the utility and difficulties of postmortem radiological methods by examining and comparing the autopsy findings with the results from MR and CT imaging in a hanging death. Keywords: Hanging, postmortem magnetic resonance imaging, tomography spiral computedTurkiye Klinikleri J Foren Med 2008, 5:35-38
