Investigation Of Drowning Cases In Adana Between Years 1997-2006

Objective: It is noticed that a lot of people have been drowning every year especially in canals. It is aimed in this study to put forth especially influence of canals on drowning and to discuss the steps to be taken. Material and Methods: Reports of external examination between the years of 1997-2006 of Adana Court of Law was evaluated than demographic specialties and the bodies taken out of water and its aqueous medium were investigated. Results: 511 drowning cases were seen among the 8833 death cases during this period of 10 years. 84.15% of cases were males and 60.67% of cases were below 20 years of age group. The distribution according to origin, 73.38% of the cases were accidentally. 52.84% of the cases were occurred in summer and mostly (61.45% of them) were found in canals. Conclusion: Lake with dam and four big canals being inside of settlement is the primary reason of the numerous drowning in Adana. Swimming class organized by municipality, opening of swimming clubs, wire netting for interrupting entrance to canals are important activities for decreasing the number of drowning. But, unfortunately all these couldn’t be sufficient enough.Keywords: Drowning, accidentsTurkiye Klinikleri J Foren Med 2008, 5:13-18
