It is known that there is about 3500 different snake species and approximately 1/10 of these species are poisonous. All over the world 2.5 billion people are beaten by snakes every year and 125.000 people died for this reason
In the cases of poisonous snake bites, local findings such as edema, heamatoma, gangrenous lesions and systemic findings like fever, nausea, vomiting, circulatory collapse, mild jaundice, delirium, convul-sions and coma can be seen. Snake bite-related death generally takes place in first 6-48 hours. Secondary infections, DIC, acute renal failure and intracranial hemorrhage can lead to death. Snake bite-related death is in fact very rare if the needed precautions are performed on time. Even in untreated snake bites by Viperidae family, death of the case in the first 24 hours is reported to be almost impossible.
We report a 6 years old girl bitted by a grey snake from left an-kle. After initial evaluation and treatment in public hospital, the patient was followed for 13 hours. After this time, upon deterioration of clinical status, she was referred to the university hospital but died there in spite of all interventions including the administration of anti-sera. We intended to discuss snake bite-related deaths on the basis of the clinical and autopsy findings of this case. Keywords: Snakebite, poisoning, autopsy, cause of deathTurkiye Klinikleri J Foren Med 2007, 4:127-130
